Volkswagen has set up a Web site, Tiguan Base, which shows the new vehicle's development stages in photos, films and facts. Volkswagen says that within the first 15 weeks, more than one million people have logged into the site worldwide.

This week in Manufacturing Weekly we take a look at the Volkswagen Group's latest production plans.

According to Russia's economy ministry, the company is considering building a components plant in the country.

The OEM has already launched construction of a new assembly plant in Kaluga, which should begin assembling Skoda Octavias from kits later this year. Full-scale production is slated to begin in 2009. A local components plant could certainly come in handy.

Meanwhile, the company's attention has also been drawn westward to North America, where it is evaluating plans to establish a second facility, possibly in the US. The manufacturer used to operate a plant in Sterling Heights Michigan, but following disappointing sales, sold it to Chrysler in the early 1980s. Its only North American plant at the moment is in Mexico and produces the New Beetle and Jetta models.

With the US dollar at record lows against the euro, a local production plant makes sense. The company is also looking to set up a second administrative hub near Detroit. Looks like someone is serious about getting it right in North America.
