AUTOMOTIVE POWERTRAIN ANALYST WEEKLY

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Volkswagen's experimental combined combustion system (CCS), which is effectively a variation on the much-vaunted homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) theme, bringing together the merits of diesel and gasoline combustion processes, could become a vital key to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with accompanying fuel savings as well as reduced local (air quality) emissions. Exceptionally high injection pressures - up to 3,000bar - are needed for the attributes of CCS to be maximised. But the fuel system must also have an unprecedented degree of rate-shaping flexibility, or what might be called its 'pressure profile' through the injection cycle. Hence the adoption, in VW's early CCS trials, of Sturman digital-valve injectors, 'borrowed' from the latest Navistar HEUI fuel system in the US, whose stepped-piston intensifier feature can be harnessed to provide a nozzle pressure boost selectively, part way through the cycle, to help fuel economy and particulate emissions especially.

But VW powertrain supremo Dr Wolfgang Steiger told Automotive World this week that the next stage in the CCS programme is likely to use the now familiar solid-tate piezo injector actuation pioneered in Germany by Siemens and later taken up by rival Bosch. It is hoped that a piezo actuator, further refined to incorporate a pressure intensifier, will achieve similar pressure performance to the Sturman design, but with faster response and with fewer moving parts.
