LIGHT VEHICLE MANUFACTURING WEEKLY - NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Workers at Volkswagen's plant near Brussels in Belgium will be sleeping a little easier this week

following the company's decision to build a future entry-level Audi model at the plant from 2009.

Concerns about the plant's future arose a few weeks ago after Volkswagen announced it was ending Golf production there and reducing the workforce by around 3,500 in the process. However, following a meeting with key executives of Volkswagen's management, including Dr. Ferdinand Piech, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen, and the Belgian Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt, it was decided that the interests of the workforce at the Brussels plant would be protected for the next few years.

The Brussels plant will manufacture more than 100,000 units of the new Audi A1 model per year.

Volkswagen plans to conduct 'intensive negotiations' over the next few weeks to find a transitional solution for those workers who might be affected by the gap between the loss of Golf production and the start of Audi A1 build.

In other news, Volkswagen has signed a formal agreement with India's government for the construction of an all-new plant in the Chakan industrial park near Pune. According to company officials, the new factory will initially produce models such as the Passat, Touareg and Phaeton. An all-new model, which is being developed specifically for the Indian market will also likely be added to the line-up at some stage.

The 110,000upa facility will open in 2009 with an estimated workforce of around 2,500. Volkswagen plans to invest ?410m (US$540.11m) in the project.
