The role played by governments in attracting or deterring automotive investment was highlighted recently with news that Audi has decided to suspend its proposed ?1bn investment in Hungary in protest against a new 'solidarity' tax imposed by the government.

The German manufacturer, which was earlier awarded a tax holiday in Hungary until 2001, is furious that it has been asked to pay an extra 4% tax from 1 September to help plug a budget deficit. The managing director of Audi Hungaria, Thomas Faustmann, said the issue at stake was not about the size of the new tax but about "whether the economic conditions put in writing by the Hungarian government can be taken eriously."

Audi announced the ?1bn (U$1.26bn) investment in June. It wants to increase production of the TT at its Gyor plant to over 50,000upa within the next five years.

On a more positive note, Audi's parent company is reportedly considering a Real 2.5bn (US$1.2bn) investment in its Brazilian operations in the period to 2011. Most of the investment will go into the development of new models.

Volkswagen is currently restructuring its Brazilian operations to enhance profitability. Plans call for 3,600 voluntary job cuts in the country, where Volkswagen employs about 22,000 workers across five factories.

A little closer to home, in Slovakia, Volkswagen has shed some light on future plans for its plant in Bratislava, home of the Volkswagen Touareg and Polo and Audi Q7. The plant, which manufactured 218,349 vehicles in 2005, will likely build around 230,000 this year. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed an output figure for 2007, but the number is likely to be even higher again.

Volkswagen, which also manufactures gearboxes and other components at the Bratislava factory, plans to source more parts locally in order to reduce costs. The plant currently sources just 36% of parts from Slovakia. Germany accounts for 40% of sourced parts while Hungary, the Czech Republic and Spain each account for between 4% and 6% of the remainder.

Volkswagen de 6500 de euro!

Este cat se poate de real. Volkswagen pregateste o lovitura pe pietele europene prin lansarea unui model al carui pret nu va depasi, spune presa germana, 6500 de euro.

Germanii de la AutoBild anunta in ultimul lor numar (in foto, imaginea de pe coperta publicatiei germane) faptul ca Volkswagen pregateste un inlocuitor pentru modelul Fox, care deocamdata se produce in Brazilia. Anuntat ca un model al carui pret nu va depasi 6500 de euro, VW-ul al carui nume ramane inca necunoscut afiseaza noul stil de design care caracterizeaza actualele modele din gama constructorului german.

Este al doilea proiect de acest gen anuntat de un producator auto european de prima mana, dupa ce Renault a dat lovitura cu Dacia Logan, chiar daca cele doua modele nu fac parte din aceeasi clasa. Acest lucru s-a intamplat in conditiile in care Logan a fost anuntat ca un model de 5000 de euro pentru ca pretul sa ii urce treptat, pana la lansare. Cauza oficiala a majorarii preturilor a fost, va reamintim, prezenta in dotarea de serie a unor elemente tehnice si de confort mai scumpe motivate prin faptul ca “vest-europenii nu pot sa conceapa o masina din care acestea sa lipseasca”.

Ei bine, chiar daca viitorul model VW va costa, mergand pe aceeasi linie, pana in 8000 de euro, acesta va reprezenta o varianta cu adevarat demna de luat in seama pentru publicul al carui principal criteriu la cumpararea unei masini este pretul. Mai mult, avand in vedere numele constructorului, calitatea si siguranta viitorului exponat al gamei Volkswagen vor trebui sa se ridice macar la nivelul lui Logan, ceea ce va insemna un asamblaj corect al elementelor interne si un rezultat EuroNCAP de minimum 3.5 stele.

In aceste conditii, sisteme ca ESP sau cel de control al tractiunii in dotarea de serie par simple presupuneri, desi publicatia germana afirma cu tarie ca ele vor exista in fisa tehnica a viitorului model. Daca este sau nu adevarat acest lucru vom vedea in viitorul apropiat, cand va vom prezenta urmatoarele indicii referitoare la noul model german.
