VW starts first short work week in 26 years

Assembly lines at some Volkswagen plants in Germany fell silent on Monday as Europe's biggest carmaker switched to a short working week for the first time in 26 years.

Scaled-back production at six VW brand plants in western Germany and one plant in eastern Germany affected 61,000 workers as VW aimed to keep inventories of unsold cars from piling up.

Assembly plants in Wolfsburg, Hanover and Emden stopped work completely, while output slowed at the engine plant in Salzgitter and the parts factory in Brunswick, the company said.

The stoppages also affected VW's central parts warehouse and a transmission plant in Kassel.

Production at the Chemnitz plant, which makes fuel-efficient petrol engines, was largely unaffected.

VW had not decided on any stoppages beyond this week because German government incentives rewarding people who scrap old cars to buy new ones were putting a floor under the market.

Volkswagen's premium arm, Audi, has put staff at its main plant in Ingolstadt on short hours for seven working days and done the same for workers at its Neckarsulm plant for six days. In all that means 86,000 VW group staff are affected.

VW's research and development staff was working normally.
