Unique in its class: the new ID. Buzz impresses with innovative driver assistance systems

image.thumb.png.d07fad29212d5e93f93012e974b132b7.png

The vehicle can perform assisted lane changes on the motorway if the turn signal lever is tapped briefly. It can use swarm data or also learn recurring parking manoeuvres: the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is being introduced with new intelligent assistance systems that can make driving even more convenient and also increase safety. This is in line with Volkswagen’s commitment to make the latest technologies accessible to a wide customer base early on.

“In the ID. Buzz, iconic design meets innovative technology, and this is reflected in new convenience and assistance systems. We are taking the next step forward on the way to highly automated driving with the use of swarm data in the latest Travel Assist,” explains Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development. “This is in line with Volkswagen’s commitment to offer premium technology and innovations in as many models as possible.”

Volkswagen is using fully integrated latest-generation assistance systems in the ID. Buzz. The optionally available Travel Assist with swarm data and Park Assist Plus with memory function3 are perfect examples of this. These systems can also be optionally ordered for all other newly produced ID. models from the ID.3 and ID.4 up to the ID.5.

image.thumb.png.8592505527ae7bf76256a85a5dfa669f.png

Travel Assist with swarm data

The optional Travel Assist can keep the vehicle in lane, maintain a distance from the vehicle in front and also ensure that the vehicle keeps to a maximum speed set by the driver. Among other things, it uses the adaptive lane guidance system for this. This system actively keeps the vehicle in the middle of its lane. Travel Assist adapts itself to the driver’s driving style and can also keep the vehicle further left or right in the lane instead of exactly in the centre. Travel Assist also comes with predictive cruise control and a cornering assist function. Here, the vehicle speed can be adapted to valid speed limits and the course of the road (bends, roundabouts, etc.).

New Travel Assist features. If anonymised swarm data is available from other Volkswagen models, Travel Assist with swarm data can use just one identified road lane marking to keep the vehicle in lane. In this case, the assistance system is also available on country roads without a central lane marking, for example. The availability of Travel Assist is increased even further by swarm data, improving comfort and the level of assistance for the customer.

image.thumb.png.f502a9ad5e3bc8c2d399542be6b022dc.png

Swarm data from the fleet. With the use of swarm data, Volkswagen is taking the next step towards highly automated driving. The anonymised swarm data is generated by several hundred thousand Volkswagen Group vehicles. For this, the vehicle fleet also collects map material with specific features from the area surrounding the vehicle – such as marker lines and road signs – and automatically transmits this information to the cloud. From there, individually adapted data is sent to the participating Volkswagen models that are currently driving along the relevant road sections. The database is growing all the time thanks to the large number of participating vehicles.

Assisted lane changes from 90 km/h. When driving on motorways at speeds above 90 km/h, Travel Assist with swarm data can actively support lane changes if this is desired by the driver. When activated, the lane change process can be started and executed by tapping the turn signal. For the operation to be completed, the sensors must not have detected any objects around the vehicle and the capacitive steering wheel must be able to detect the driver’s hands. The ID. Buzz then automatically steers itself into the desired lane. The driver is able to intervene at any time and take over the manoeuvre.

image.thumb.png.70ea43c947682e8769be576b3bfba364.png

Park Assist Plus with memory function allows the vehicle to drive independently into parking spaces

The second optional assistance system in the ID. Buzz is Park Assist Plus with memory function. This innovative driver assistance system can be used to teach the vehicle up to five individual parking manoeuvres. The memory function remembers parking procedures at speeds below 40 km/h and covering distances of up to 50 metres. This allows the vehicle to be parked in a carport or garage, for example. The driver only has to park the vehicle once and save the parking procedure. The ID. Buzz can then repeat the learned parking manoeuvre on its own. All the driver has to do then is monitor the situation.

image.thumb.png.df522e0a3c849bb4d56eeaa2063d7d34.png

After activation in the Parking menu, Park Assist Plus can also search for a parking space and carry out the parking manoeuvre. When driving past parking spaces, the intelligent assistance system detects suitable parallel parking spaces at speeds of up to 40 km/h and parking bays at up to 20 km/h. The driver then only needs to stop at the selected parking space, press the brake and activate and monitor the parking procedure. The assistance system parks the ID. Buzz with the aid of the sensors that monitor the surroundings – it steers, accelerates, brakes and changes gear. It can also continue parking manoeuvres that have been started by the driver and complete them if possible. The system also provides support when driving out of parallel parking spaces again.

Wide range of driver assistance systems

In addition to Travel Assist with swarm data and Park Assist Plus with memory function, the ID. Buzz also features other driver assistance systems that can help to increase driving safety. The following assistance systems are on board as standard: swerve support, oncoming vehicle braking when turning, Driver Alert System, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitorin, lane keeping system Lane Assist , Dynamic Road Sign Display, and the Car2X traffic hazard alert function, where vehicles inform each other of critical situations. Other assist systems are also optionally available. These are Adaptive Cruise Control ACC stop & go (see Travel Assist for included functions), anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring, Keyless Advanced locking and starting system, Park Assist Plus, Area View and the lane change system Side Assist.

The first model in Volkswagen’s range of all-electric ID cars, the ID.3 was launched in 2019. The Golf-sized EV will receive a facelift in 2023 and VW has given us a glimpse as to how it’ll look when it arrives next spring.

The exterior already shows a new design of front bumper with more aggressive side air intakes plus a tweaked headlight signature and reshaped bonnet. The overall design of the ID.3 won’t change much, but we could see new alloy wheel designs and there’s a new rear bumper below a set of slightly altered rear lights.

Volkswagen says the new ID.3 is “equipped with the latest software generation, which improves system performance and is able to receive over-the-air updates”. It’s not clear if the new car will offer improved range and performance figures, although the revised exterior design should affect efficiency in some way.

The interior of the ID.3 will be reworked for 2023. “The new ID.3 demonstrates our commitment to quality, design and sustainability. The design has matured, and we’ve upgraded the materials used in the interior”, said Imelda Labbé, Volkswagen Marketing Board Member.

The current car’s 10-inch central infotainment touchscreen will be swapped out for a 12-inch screen with a new control system. VW says the latest infotainment technology is more convenient and straightforward for users. Features such as Travel Assist and Park Assist Plus will be made available as optional extras and judging by the teaser images, we can expect a new HUD display. The centre console will also be restyled and feature two cup holders.

Volkswagen produces the ID.3 at its Zwickau and Dresden plants in Germany, but with the updated model this will be expanded to its factory in Wolfsburg to cope with demand.

The updated ID.3 is available to order now in Germany in Life, Business, Style, Max and Tour guise. UK trim levels should build on the Life model - currently the only ID.3 on sale here.

image.thumb.png.85e4e1f1db91c3654ffb694ff9095138.png

Final tests of the new Touareg close to the Arctic Circle

image.thumb.png.c7dfa845a702ea654a04cdc750bc2c19.png

This year, Volkswagen will continue the success story of the million-selling Touareg with a comprehensive technical and visual update of the premium SUV. The rear and front of the luxury SUV have been redesigned, the chassis has been further developed and impresses with its combination of comfort and performance. Before the world premiere in the summer, Volkswagen is now providing a first preview of the update for its top model.

The camouflaged new Touareg is still completing its final test miles in Swedish Lapland. Although the design modifications are still hidden under an oversized QR code wrap, the pictures of the disguised prototype already provide a concrete preview of the first technical details. At the front, for example, it is possible to see the newly developed IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights and the elements of an also new LED light strip integrated between them.
IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlight with 38,400 micro LEDs
HD stands for High Definition, a very high resolution. What is meant is a sea of extremely bright points of light – generated by a total of 38,400 micro LEDs. They turn night into day and ensure significantly more brightness on the road - without dazzling oncoming traffic. 19,200 micro-LEDs are distributed over the new headlights on each side of the vehicle. The matrix system projects an interactive carpet of light into the lane of the luxury SUV. This so-called "lane light" makes driving at night more comfortable and makes it easier to drive through narrow motorway construction sites in the dark, as the carpet of light optimally illuminates the lane.

image.thumb.png.34ff935b659352b3abf10b9bff4f5e1f.png

Illuminated VW logo on the rear. As the first model from Volkswagen, the new Touareg has an illuminated logo on the rear end. Since January 2023, the Volkswagen badge lit up in red has also been permitted in Europe. Previously the shining brand logo was allowed only in markets such as China or the US.

New chassis generation. Volkswagen has further developed the chassis of the always all-wheel drive Touareg. Among other things, a roof load sensor is now used, which is networked with the chassis electronics. The advantage: increased agility when the roof is not loaded. If, on the other hand, a roof box is installed, the sensor recognizes this and passes this information on to assistance systems such as the ESC. This increases the driving stability of the Touareg.

The standard steel spring running gear and the optional two-chamber air suspension running gear have also been given a new setup to achieve an even larger bandwidth between maximum comfort and optimum performance.

image.thumb.png.3a5a8767359cac4dd8f934361f601309.png

Enhanced vehicle interior. The Touareg is equipped with the "Innovision Cockpit". It is operated via the central touchscreen (display diagonal: 38.1 centimeters or 15 inches), the multifunction steering wheel and analogue elements such as the volume control in the center console. The "Innovision Cockpit" of the new Touareg offers, among other things, lane-precise navigation and high-resolution HD map data. Voice control has also been further developed. The app integration via smartphone and "App Connect" (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto) can now also be done wirelessly.

The high quality level of the Touareg was further improved by evaluating customer feedback: the armrests and the center console panels are softer - a plus in comfort. The new Touareg thus also stands for the goal of gearing Volkswagen models even more consistently to the needs of customers. The update makes the Touareg a well-balanced SUV all-rounder that masters long distances as well as everyday life.

Volkswagen makes the interior of the ID. models even more sustainable

image.thumb.png.7a6bcd8c618bc1b6d9feda4790797f35.png

Volkswagen is making the all-electric ID. family even more sustainable – including the choice of materials for the interior. During the course of this year, the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 will receive selected innovations that were first used in mass production in the ID. Buzz. As one example of this, VW uses Seaqual® yarn as a seat cover material. This is made from 10 per cent collected marine debris and 90 per cent recycled PES yarn. The CO2 emissions from production are almost one third lower than for conventional cover materials.

Silke Bagschik, Head of Product Line E-Mobility, explains: “Through the widespread use of recycled materials and the animal-leather-free interior in our ID. models, we are further improving the eco-balance of our vehicles - with high demands on haptical and long-term quality. The feedback from our customers confirms that we will continue to expand these sustainable approaches in the future."

ID. Buzz as a pioneer for recycling innovations. Volkswagen already uses a large number of new materials in the interior of the ID. Buzz, and these will now be introduced in the other models of the ID. family step-by-step. For example, alternative materials made of ocean plastic or old PET bottles (to be exact, 63 size 500 ml bottles) are used in numerous places in the interior of the new Volkswagen bus. The outer material of a seat cover is made of Seaqual® yarn, which is comprised of 10 per cent collected marine debris and 90 per cent recycled PES yarn. This saves 32 per cent of CO2 emissions compared with conventional surface materials. In seat covers with ArtVelours Eco®, the recycling share is 71 per cent. In addition, the surfaces of the headliner and floor covering in the ID. Buzz are made completely from recycled polyester. Recycled plastics can also be found in the insulating layer of the carpet. The same applies to components such as the underbody cladding and the wheel housing liners.

image.thumb.png.ab357feffb379e1b52e7b34fc1b44d51.png

In addition, Volkswagen no longer uses chrome for trim parts on the doors, instrument panel and steering wheel clip of the ID. Buzz because the production of chrome harms the environment. The chrome has been replaced by a liquid paint with chrome look that has a bio-based binder. Some of these recycling innovations from the ID. Buzz will now be introduced in the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7.

Recycled materials as a full-value alternative. Recyclates are processed used materials that are applied to new products. In the case of plastics, such materials include PET bottles and old fishing nets. These plastic waste materials are processed into granulates and can then be reused. Depending on requirements, components can be made using only a small share of recycled materials or completely from them. In the interior, the reused materials must always offer the same characteristics as conventional ones. This applies to both their look and feel as well as to their durability and longevity.

Volkswagen on the Way to ZERO. By 2030, Volkswagen is aiming to cut carbon emissions per vehicle by 40 per cent, and the company plans to have a climate-neutral balance by 2050 at the latest. To achieve these goals, VW analyses and optimises the complete vehicle life cycle: from basic research, through development and production, up to end-of-life recycling. Volkswagen also strives to realise closed material cycles for all the raw materials used.

GTI is coming home: Volkswagen is bringing the GTI Meeting to Wolfsburg
image.thumb.png.3d4fee5ab2d6a0fc55a5bc57958dc294.png

Volkswagen is taking the legendary GTI Meeting at Lake Wörthersee into the future: From 2024, it will take place in the heart of the brand, in Wolfsburg. Near the Volkswagen plant, the "GTI Coming Home" event will welcome enthusiasts and fans of sporty Volkswagen models.

“Our GTI fans are of great importance to Volkswagen and that's why the exchange with them is very dear to us," says Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars. "For this reason, after the GTI Meeting at Lake Wörthersee was unfortunately cancelled, we decided pretty quickly to offer the GTI fan community in Wolfsburg a new home for the event. When planning the event, we also want to take into account the ideas of the fans, because it should above all be a meeting for them. Accordingly, we will certainly be able to offer some highlights and surprises in the coming year."

image.thumb.png.21727f9915ffa2f7b0f5d1edab06d687.png

GTI – these three letters have stood for sportiness, emotions and dynamics for almost half a century. The fan community all over the world continues to grow up to the present day, and the fans of the cult brand meet regularly in clubs and exchange information with each other in dedicated communities. Since 1982, the largest GTI Meet has traditionally taken place at Lake Wörthersee in Austria – but the local municipality Maria Wörth recently took the decision that it no longer wanted to host the annual event in future.

image.thumb.png.3fc655e047c26994edd17007d4acf317.png

Volkswagen has decided to continue this tradition in Wolfsburg from next year: In addition to vehicle presentations, stage shows and club meets, there will be many other interesting events and surprises for GTI enthusiasts. The areas and infrastructure in Wolfsburg offer ideal prerequisites for welcoming a large number of visitors with their vehicles. Under the motto "Coming Home", Volkswagen will make the Wolfsburg location the new home of the GTI fan community.

Enhanced quality, likeable, digital:  world premiere of the new ID.3

image.thumb.png.b0002e2f04fe90dcbc9b7a2f6d3f7912.png

Fresh design, higher-quality materials and the latest-generation assist systems: that is the new ID.3. Two and a half years after the launch of the first generation, the all-electric bestseller from Volkswagen is now coming to the market with a comprehensive upgrade. In addition to the latest software, the compact electric car comes with a sharpened exterior and refined interior design. The range of colours has been extended by new colours, including Dark Olivine Green. High-quality, animal-free and sustainable materials reflect Volkswagen’s strategy for the all-electric ID. family.

Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen: “With the second-generation of the ID.3, we are continuing the success story of our ID. family. The design has matured and the materials in the interior have been significantly upgraded. The new ID.3 demonstrates our clear commitment to quality, design and operability, and we have systematically taken on board the wishes of our customers.” The new ID.3 is one of ten electric models that VW will launch by 2026.

Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen: “With the second-generation of the ID.3, we are continuing the success story of our ID. family. The design has matured and the materials in the interior have been significantly upgraded. The new ID.3 demonstrates our clear commitment to quality, design and operability, and we have systematically taken on board the wishes of our customers.” The new ID.3 is one of ten electric models that VW will launch by 2026.

image.thumb.png.7873b23686b0bb127314b756971d0846.png

Interior: superior quality, sustainable and animal-free. The interior of the new ID.3 combines modern design and sustainable materials. Precise seams in a contrasting colour additionally enhance the feeling of quality. VW uses the microfibre material Artvelours Eco for the door trims and seat covers, a fabric that contains 71 per cent recyclate. This is a secondary raw material that is obtained by recycling plastic that has previously been disposed of as waste at least once. Artvelours Eco has the same characteristics in terms of look and feel and durability as conventional new materials. The interior equipment is also completely animal-free.

In addition, numerous suggestions from customers were collected and implemented as product improvements and to enhance the standard equipment package. Soft, foam-backed surfaces in the cockpit create a new haptic experience. The remodelled interior door trims also have softer and larger surfaces.

image.thumb.png.7823754d5f508858c28b334492c8fd33.png

Intelligently connected as standard. Charging is easier and even more convenient with the new ID.3., thanks to standard functions such as Plug & Charge – where the vehicle authenticates itself and starts the charging process when the charging cable is plugged in at a charging station – and the intelligent Electric Vehicle Route Planner. On longer journeys, the Electric Vehicle Route Planner calculates charging stops so that the destination can be reached as quickly as possible – using current traffic information and forecasts in addition to the battery charge level. The charging stops are evaluated dynamically on the basis of the capacity of the individual charging stations. This means that the route planning function may suggest two short charging operations with high power instead of a single long charging stop with low power. In addition, the system detects charging stations that are occupied – and does not suggest them in the first place. Points of interest can be transferred to the car using the free We Connect ID. app.

image.thumb.png.13c71bb0235a0ca14a4495dd9d56bb9f.png

Modern and intuitive operating concept. The new ID.3 comes with the latest software generation. This improves system performance and is able to receive over-the-air updates. The compact driver display with a screen diagonal of 13.4 centimetres (5.3 inches) is operated on the multifunction steering wheel. The middle of the console accommodates the now standard 30.5-centimetre (12-inch) touch display for the navigation system, telephone functions, media, assist systems and vehicle settings. Many customer wishes were also taken into account when designing the menu structure. Among other things, the layout has become clearer, and the charging menu is now located on the first level of the touch display.

The optional augmented reality head-up display (AR head-up display) projects information such as the vehicle speed and dynamic navigation instructions onto the windscreen. For the driver, this information appears to be 10 metres in front of the vehicle – displayed with the correct perspective and clearly recognisable.

Latest-generation assist systems. The optional Travel Assist with swarm data3 is now also available in the ID.3. In combination with the adaptive cruise control (ACC) for longitudinal vehicle control from 0 km/h up to the top speed and Lane Assist for lateral control, this driver assist system can make use of two proven systems that are fully integrated with one another in the new ID.3. If swarm data is available, Travel Assist needs just one identified road lane marking to keep the vehicle in lane when driving on country roads.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development: “With the new ID.3 we are bringing premium technologies into the compact class – in line with our Volkswagen goal of successively offering innovations in the whole model range. This is also reflected in the latest-generation convenience and assist systems in the ID.3. By using swarm data in the Travel Assist system, we are taking the next step on the path to highly automated driving.”

image.thumb.png.b135135e4eecebf8b58bd34bb9419c36.png

Volkswagen on the Way to ZERO. VW has reached a further milestone on its way to becoming a zero-emission, software-based mobility services provider. Since the launch of the ID. family, more than 600,000 ID. models based on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform have already been delivered to customers around the world so far. The Volkswagen product range now comprises six ID. models. In addition to production in Zwickau and Dresden, the new ID.3 will also be built in the parent plant in Wolfsburg from autumn 2023.
