The Golf once again the favorite car of Germans and Europeans in 2020

image.thumb.png.e997c3719226dc7d4bb29138793398dc.png

It’s full speed ahead for the icon of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, the Golf, since all eight derivatives were made available in the fall of 2020. Last year it was once again the top-selling car in Europe with around 312,000 deliveries The Wolfsburg figurehead was once again the top-selling car in Germany last year, too, with around 133,900 deliveries to customers. “In 2020 the Golf is still exactly where it belongs,” says Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

“With the Golf 8 we are seamlessly continuing the success story of its previous generations. The car is continuing to set technical standards in many dimensions,” said Brandstätter. “After the outbreak of the coronavirus in spring interrupted the market launch that had just started, the Golf had a lot of catching up to do in the second half of the year.

In particular, the availability of all of the important model derivatives, such as the GTI, GTD und GTE, gave the Golf a second wind in the third quarter,” Brandstätter continued. The high demand for hybrid models also contributed to this success. Because of this, by the end of the year one in three Golfs was a hybrid. You can also see just how dynamic the back end of the year was in the fact that, of the approximately 312,000 Golf models delivered in Europe, around 179,000 hit the streets in the second half of the year alone.

At the end of the year, the Golf was by far and away at the top of registration statistics in Germany, followed by two other Volkswagen models, the Tiguan and the Passat. A car from competitors only made it as high as fourth place on the sales list.

The Golf was unanimously named the best car in the compact class by German trade press and won all 16 comparative tests in the Auto Motor und Sport, Auto Bild and Auto Zeitung magazines. The customers are of the same opinion, making the Golf the number 1 once again. “I would like to thank all of the customers who have given us their trust. But my gratitude also goes to our entire team that have done an excellent job during the difficult conditions of the coronavirus crisis,” said Brandstätter.

Volkswagen oprește producția de Golf pentru piața americană. Uzina din Mexic va produce ID.3

https://www.profit.ro/povesti-cu-profit/auto-transporturi/o-noua-decizie-istorica-volkswagen-opreste-definitiv-productia-modelului-golf-pentru-piata-din-sua-19921991

Perfectly equipped for the winter with 4MOTION all-wheel drive

4MOTION all-wheel drive by Volkswagen is a successful piece of technology with many different facets. The current extreme weather conditions present the ideal opportunity to take a more in-depth look at the technology and also take a brief look back.

image.thumb.png.34711512ac1eecf3f4ac0b21076d998e.png

Fantastic snow landscapes all over Germany, temperatures well below the zero-degree mark – a winter fairytale. On the roads, however, this poses a very special challenge for drivers and vehicles. For decades, all-wheel drive has been helping here, preventing the wheels from spinning and improving traction.

In 1984, Volkswagen launched a brand new product onto the market in the form of the Passat Estate GT syncro equipped with all-wheel drive. Ever since then, Volkswagens with four powered wheels have been the cornerstones of the brand’s model range. And Volkswagen has never stopped enhancing the technology in its all-wheel drive systems. From 1996 onwards, the name “syncro” was replaced by “4MOTION”. Nowadays, the all-wheel drive system is connected to the cutting-edge assist systems and offers better performance than ever before. So, models with all-wheel drive are not just in high demand among winter sports fans.

“We have been building cars with all-wheel drives for almost 40 years”

says Thomas Ulbrich, member of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Board of Management responsible for Technical Development. “Thanks to our systematic development process, we are able to offer this technology at an attractive price. As a result, huge numbers of customers can experience the benefits of all-wheel drive – this is an advantage when it comes to driving safety and enjoyment.”

image.thumb.png.4f29b36823adc8624222670b10672398.png

In 1984, Volkswagen launched the Passat Estate GT syncro equipped with all-wheel drive.

Models with all-wheel drive are available in almost all Volkswagen product lines. Even though 4MOTION improves traction and performance in all weather conditions, in the winter months, you will find lots of Volkswagens equipped with 4MOTION in locations that are particularly susceptible to icy and snowy conditions. However, all-wheel drive not only makes sense in snowy mountainous regions or on extreme off-road terrain. This technology improves traction and driving dynamics on almost any terrain and therefore creates the ideal bond between the vehicle and the road. What is more, all Volkswagens equipped with all-wheel drive are powerful towing vehicles, making them ideal companions for use with horse boxes or boat trailers.

Four are better than two – how 4MOTION works

The intelligent 4MOTION all-wheel drive activates

  • the front and rear axle
  • depending on the terrain
  • within just a few milli-seconds.

This reliably prevents the wheels from spinning out and helps to create perfect traction for the Volkswagen.

Volkswagen offers various versions of the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The most common version is the system with an electronically controlled multiplate clutch; it is used in models with transverse engines (e.g. T-Roc, Tiguan, Passat, Arteon, etc.). This version mainly powers the front wheels. If the electronics system notices a loss of traction, it immediately activates the rear wheels as well. This happens so quickly and smoothly that you tend not to notice how the all-wheel drive is improving the driving experience. Because only the front wheels are powered when conditions are good, these vehicles are also very economical.

image.thumb.png.0e52762fd53f310de82f12c83afb6e31.png

A reliable companion for ice and snow: the Touareg with standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

The third generation of the Touareg is also equipped with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. The all-wheel drive is coupled with an 8-gear automatic gearbox (gear shift by “Shift by Wire”, gear display in the handle and on the instruments). A centre differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70 per cent of the drive force reaches the front axle and up to 80 per cent reaches the rear axle.

4MOTION Active Control – individual driving profiles for every type of terrain

image.thumb.png.3a338f52896fbdd0edda23b7d7783de2.png

The Touareg and the all-wheel drive versions of the T-Roc, Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace also offer drivers the chance to activate individual driving profiles – depending on the terrain. They can do so with ease using the rotary and pressure switch for the 4MOTION Active Control located behind the gear knob. This multifunctional and intuitive switch controls the all-wheel drive functions and, with them, the respective driving profiles. The driver uses it to activate four higher-level profiles and different pop-up menus. If drivers turn the round switch to the left, they access two road profiles in the form of Street and Snow. If the switch is turned to the right, two off-road profiles open: Offroad (automatic setting of off-road parameters) and Offroad Individual (variable settings).

4MOTION Active Control can be used to adapt all relevant assist systems to the drive situation in a matter of seconds. The Comfort, Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual driving profiles, also selected via 4MOTION Active Control, are also integrated. These profiles are used to customise parameters such as the engine, automatic gearbox, climate control and electromechanical steering.

The 4MOTION all-wheel drive has many strengths

Its central control unit constantly monitors the condition of the driving dynamics in the vehicle and wheels and distributes the driving forces intelligently thanks to its lightning-quick response times. The benefits include:

  • Better traction
  • Refined driving behaviour
  • Optimum powertrain strategy, e.g. for cornering, overrun mode or towing
  • Sophisticated balance of forces between the front and rear axle
  • Maximum stability both on-road and off-road

image.thumb.png.d82d3b780ec12efc7faee762a6bed284.png

A new dimension of driving dynamics:
4MOTION with R-Performance torque vectoring in the new Golf R

Away from adverse weather conditions and poor terrain, 4MOTION all-wheel drive is also a safe bet for Volkswagen’s extremely sporty models. The best examples of this are the new Golf R, Tiguan R, Arteon R and Arteon R Shooting Brake: they come with a newly developed all-wheel drive system with selective wheel torque control on the rear axle – known as 4MOTION with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. A complicated name, but an exciting innovation: here a new rear axle drive distributes the drive power not just between the front and rear axles, but also between the two rear wheels. So, when cornering, this directs up to 100 per cent of the power to the wheel on the outside of the curve, with noticeable benefits for the driving dynamics when cornering.

As a world first, the all-wheel drive is also networked via a Vehicle Dynamics Manager with other running gear systems such the electronic differential locks (XDS) and adaptive chassis control DCC. Thanks to this close integration of the different systems, the new R-models offer optimum traction characteristics, neutral handling with the utmost level of precision, maximum agility and, last but not least, maximum driving pleasure.

A car for all occasions

Plenty of space for family and leisure, compact for city traffic, and comfortable over longer journeys – there’s really nothing the new Volkswagen ID.4 can’t do.

image.thumb.png.8fdca0d8c4a46d1f66a1163679c78062.png

With the ID.3, Volkswagen took e-Cars out of the niche and opened a new chapter in individual sustainable mobility. Now the story continues with the ID.4 SUV. The latest e-Model from the ID. family starts in the world’s largest market segment, the compact SUV class.

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), one in four people in Germany alone drives a vehicle in the compact class, one in eight a mid-size car, and already one in twelve an SUV. For all these people, the ID.4 may be their next car. Why? Because the Volkswagen brand’s first electric SUV pretty much disproves all preconceptions about e-Cars, offers many different usage options and is therefore likely to be attractive to a broad customer base.

The ID.4 is launched in Europe with two different edition models – the ID.4 1ST and the ID.4 1ST Max. In Germany, they cost 49,950 euros and 59,950 euros respectively (both with 19 percent VAT). Those customers are also entitled to a net subsidy of 9,000 euros each. This puts the ID.4 on a price level with the Tiguan – Germany’s most popular SUV.

ID.4 – Enough space for the family

Families in particular can rejoice: The ID.4 offers plenty of space for children and everything else that needs to come along, and even accommodates two child seats in the second row. Above all, the three full-sized seats in the second row are a decisive criterion for many. So far, only some large SUVs or MPVs offer this feature. The long wheelbase of 2.77 meters leaves as much legroom in the rear as in a vehicle of the next class up. The panoramic glass roof (standard on the ID.4 1ST Max) extends almost across the entire roof and brings plenty of light for reading or playing for all passengers.

image.thumb.png.e4c83cf37871446e63d085b3bae5f276.png

Family zone: In the rear, the ID.4 offers space for two child seats.

image.thumb.png.475d99e8aeeed57c839f4cecc4c8a928.png

ID.4 – The compact SUV

Volkswagen wants to attract a broad customer group with the CO2-free compact SUV. That’s the reason why not only plenty of space inside the car but also the most compact possible dimensions on the outside are important factors. The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) makes both possible. Because the lithium-ion battery is located in the vehicle floor and the motor is mounted directly in front of the rear axle, the spacious ID.4 offers exterior dimensions like a compact car. This means it fits into almost any parking space and has no problems even on narrow roads.

Numerous assistance systems also support driving in city traffic and parking. The “Front Assist” emergency braking system comes as standard in the ID.4. This enables the car to detect pedestrians and obstacles and prevent an imminent collision. The standard acoustic parking aid is also helpful and also brings an automatic maneuvering brake function. In addition, the ID.4 has a turning circle of around 10.2 meters – astonishingly small for its size.

image.thumb.png.be41752a8c932793ee4f288114d2bbf2.png

ID.4 - Always worth a journey

For years, poor range and the lengthy recharging procedure were the major shortcomings of electric vehicles. With the ID.4, that is largely a thing of the past. The e-SUV also handles long distances with ease. In the ID.4 1STmodels, a battery with a net energy content of 77 kWh serves as the power storage unit. It provides a range of up to 522 kilometers. At a DC fast-charging station, for example from IONITY, the ID.4 with the 77 kWh battery can recharge DC for the next 320 kilometers (according to WLTP) in around 30 minutes – with up to 125 kW charging power.

image.thumb.png.3d7ab8bc7554ac4559517910309a1bcd.png

Sufficient battery capacity, fast charging, plus a spacious interior and a generous 543-liter trunk makes the ID.4 the ideal touring vehicle. For those with even more luggage: A roof box can be easily mounted on the standard roof rails.

Safety thanks to assistance systems (within the system limits)

  • Lane Assist: Lane departure warning system can help ensure that the vehicle does not leave its lane
  • Front Assist: Emergency brake assist including turn braking function and evasive action support can help prevent accidents
  • ACC: Distance control “stop & go” with speed limiter:
  • Interpretation of navigation data and traffic symbols
  • ACC automatically can reduce the speed in front of bends, roundabouts, speed limit signs and towns
  • Eco Assist: Alerts the driver when they should take their foot off the gas pedal for efficiency reasons
  • Travel Assist: can control distance to the vehicle in front and help keep the ID.4 in the middle of the lane
  • Side Assist:Can assist with lane changes via radar system
  • Emergency Assist: Can bring the ID.4 to a halt when the driver is no longer able to do so

image.thumb.png.1e44a846257dcc2da38bade4a1155cea.png

The ID.4 – Car plus high utility

Even those who want to transport larger items will find the ID.4 the ideal companion. The 543-liter trunk can be expanded to 1,575 liters by folding down the rear seats. The ID.4 1ST Max has the electrically operated “Easy Open & Close” tailgate on board, which opens by foot movement. There is also a luggage net, a net partition and a variable loading floor.

And if that's not enough: A trailer hitch can be ordered as an option. This allows the electric SUV to tow trailers weighing up to 1,000 kilograms (limited, at a 12 percent gradient) – enough for a visit to the DIY store with a standard trailer. And it’s also practical for installing a bike rack on top – for family vacations or spontaneous mountain bike trips into the woods. Thanks to good traction from the rear-wheel drive and its 16 centimeters of ground clearance, the ID.4 also cuts a fine figure on light terrain.

image.thumb.png.819ab7bfb59d48659bcd0104832ba5f6.png

The trunk volume is impressive, and with the seats folded down, the ID.4 can even transport furniture.

image.thumb.png.9b60c05f0ca26f73503c572ba30e2cfd.png

The ID.4 – Car with fun factor

The ID.4 is a versatile family vehicle, a practical SUV – and a car that guarantees driving fun. Because it’s not just the large wheels with a diameter of up to 21 inches that show off the car’s sporty, robust character: An electric motor sits directly in front of the rear axle of the ID.4, driving the wheels via a 1-speed transmission. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 8.5 seconds in the most powerful version, and the top speed is limited to 160 km/h. Thanks to even weight distribution on both axles, the ID.4 also offers great traction. The rear-wheel drive is an additional fun factor. A sporty top model with all-wheel drive will soon follow.

The good performance data also has to do with the highly developed aerodynamics. In addition to the flowing basic shape of the body, many detailed solutions contribute to this outstanding outcome. For example, the taillights together with the large roof-edge spoiler ensure a clean break in the flow. Added to this is the unusually low center of gravity for an SUV. Depending on the equipment, the ID.4 is around 10 centimeters lower than the Tiguan and impresses with agile handling – not least thanks to rear-wheel drive and its 50:50 weight distribution on the two axles.

The nice thing is that the driver can decide spontaneously whether they want their e-SUV to be more sporty or comfortable. The magic word for this is DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control). The adaptive chassis control can be ordered as an option. It is linked to the driving profile selection, which offers a choice of Eco, Comfort and Individual modes. Both systems make the range between comfort and sportiness even wider. Here, too, the e-SUV leaves nothing else to be desired.

image.thumb.png.9a3d48fbd06df13891e51cb3dadb3cfa.png

Wouldn’t it be great to never again miss a goal scored by your beloved football team – even when you’re driving? This dream scenario for many football fans is now a reality in all new Golf from the 2020 model year onwards: The free “We Score” app delivers live football updates into the vehicle’s cockpit! Users can pre-set three clubs and one national team, and follow their favourites in all competitions. Along with live scores – which football fans will recognise from smartphone apps – standings and football news are also displayed in the app. All this information can also be read out using the “text-to-speech” function.

The new “We Score” In-Car app is the latest addition to the Volkswagen digital family in the new Golf: Customers can now enjoy news, tables, and the latest scores from the footballing world, even while they are at the wheel. Users can set three clubs and one national team as favourites. A live ticker is also available during matches. What’s more, customers need never miss another goal while on the road, thanks to push notifications of their favourite teams’ live results; these are displayed in such a way that they do not distract the driver from the road ahead. A live ticker gives real-time match updates, and the table can be easily brought up to show the latest standings.

The new “We Score” app covers the top two divisions and the main cup competition of the relevant country. In Germany the 3. Liga is also available. The Europa League and Champions League are supported, in addition of course to the European Championships which have been postponed to this summer – with Volkswagen’s commitment to football reaffirmed as a mobility partner for UEFA EURO 2020.

In-Car Shop

“We Score” is easy to access via the infotainment system in the Golf. After a single registration the vehicle app can be downloaded. The “We Score” app is supported by the “Discover Pro” and “Discover Media” infotainment systems. Alongside the “We Score” and “Amazon Alexa” services, customers can also use the In-Car Shop to subscribe to data plans which allow them to use streaming services or a Wi-Fi hotspot. The “We Connect Plus” extension is also easy to order in the In-Car Shop. Further products are in the pipeline.

Volkswagen as an official mobility partner of the DFB

Volkswagen demonstrates its commitment to football in a variety of ways, not least as an official mobility partner to the German Football Association (DFB). True to its motto, “Football means all of us”, the company supports Germany’s favourite sport from the grassroots to the elite: it is not only about focusing on the national teams, but on football itself as the connecting link between Volkswagen and popular sport.

At an international level, Volkswagen is a mobility partner of UEFA national team tournaments, including the European Championships which will take place this summer. Volkswagen is also supporting seven teams which have qualified for the tournament: Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Finland, and Russia.

OH DA!

Celebrating the birthday of an icon:Volkswagen launches the exclusive Golf GTI Clubsport 45 onto the market
DB2021AU00051_medium.thumb.jpg.28eb5b0b84f20cb0e36dfab539a1588f.jpg

In the summer of 1976, Volkswagen launched a distinctively sporty Golf onto the market: the GTI. At that time no one at Volkswagen had any idea that the Golf GTI would eventually become the world’s most successful compact sports car. But that is exactly what happened – from production of the 5,000 vehicles that were originally planned to well in excess of 2.3 million today. Now Volkswagen is marking the 45th birthday of this iconic car with an anniversary model: the Golf GTI Clubsport 45 – an exclusive edition of the 221 kW/300 PS Golf GTI Clubsport. Extensive individualisation makes the Clubsport 45 a ready-made collector’s item, even as new. First presales will begin in selected European countries on 1 March. Price in Germany: from 47,790 euros.

Even the “standard” Golf GTI Clubsport is technically distinct from the classic Golf GTI, with features including a 55 PS turbocharged engine (TSI) and the Special driving mode for race tracks. Visual highlights of the Clubsport include larger air intakes (delivering more oxygen to the TSI), a specially designed open roof spoiler to allow improved airflow (greater downforce), and a separate sport exhaust system.

The Clubsport 45 is ready to take to the road with more individual customisation than ever before. The exterior boasts a striking black roof complete with black roof spoiler, in homage to the black-framed rear window of the first Golf GTI. With the Race package, which is available as standard and exclusive to the Golf GTI Clubsport 45, equipment includes 19-inch Scottsdale alloy wheels in a high-gloss black finish, with a narrow accent pinstripe detail in Tornado Red. The Race package also includes a sport exhaust system and removal of the Vmax limiter (otherwise top speed is limited to 250 km/h). Lettering on the side sill panel and the “45” added to the lettering on the boot lid underpin the impression of dynamism. The Clubsport 45 series also features IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with the red trim strip which is included on all GTIs.

The interior of the anniversary model also showcases classic GTI insignia. Embellishments include GTI lettering on the backrests of the front premium sport seats. A “45” adds character to the multi-function sport steering wheel at the centre spoke (at 6 o’clock).

With the new Golf GTI Clubsport 45, Volkswagen is adding a new chapter to the high-performance GTI versions released: The original Golf GTI Clubsport was launched in 2016, on the 40th birthday of the cult sports car. That first member of the Clubsport series achieved 195 kW (265 PS) and could temporarily deliver 213 kW (290 PS) using a boost function. That same year also saw the arrival of the Golf GTI Clubsport S, which had a constantly attainable maximum performance of 228 kW (310 PS). In autumn 2020 Volkswagen released the new Golf GTI Clubsport, a car which featured the first-ever instance of the standard electromechanical front-axle locking differential control being integrated into the driving dynamics manager network – as does the newly launched Clubsport 45. This intelligent connection sets a new benchmark in driving dynamics.
